DB-12J
Sir Jacob Epstein ~ 'Madonna and Christ Child' Cast in Bronze, unsigned.

Quoted from: "Jacob Epstein - A Catologue of the Collection of Edward P. Schinman": "The casts of the two heads represent
but a part of the finished group now in Riverside Church, in New York City. Epstein has only slightly idealized the figures
and he does this without any loss of religious feeling.  He used not simply a particular mother and child, but an Indian/Native
American mother and child, Sunita and her son Enver. The huge eyes of the Christ Child seem to be all-seeing, while still
projecting his innocence. The Madonna's face exhibits the stoic acceptance of the future death of Christ. Epstein wrote:
' The model was of that eternal Oriental type which seemed to me just right for a work of this religious character. When I
had finished the head, the model remarked that she could not possibly ' look as good as I made her.'  She recognized that
there was something eternal and divine in it and outside herself.".                                                                                              $16,500.

Madonna: 21" W x 13" D x 19" H
Child: 8" W x 9" D x 11 1/2" H
